Viva la Mamma ! de Donizetti à l'Opéra

Viva la Mamma ! Gaetano Donizetti

From 22nd June to 8th July 2017, at the Opéra de Lyon

When the Opera decides to cast and parody itself on stage, the divas, mezzos, castratos and contra tenors swiftly emerge to walk the planks, along with all their madness, ambiguity, ambitions and their excess.... Voilà the theme of Gaetano Donizetti's production, Viva la Mamma.

The plot portrays the "making-of" of an opera besieged with unforeseen events, set in a mise en abyme through which the highly colourful characters take to the stage. Most notably, the much-celebrated character of Mamma Agata (played by Laurent Naouri) who, fussing over her daughter, the seconda donna, attempts to thrust her into the spotlight and later on proposes that she herself replace a missing castrato!

This opera bouffe concludes the season with a note of humour and comedic farce. At first glance that is, as beyond the comedy one can also perceive the questioning of identity... A production full of extravagance and humour, of course, but not just.

The director, Laurent Pelly, has added a touch of his own personality without betraying the original piece. Hence the stage design is absolutely breath-taking: an old and abandoned 19th century Italian theatre in which the actors perform as if they were ghosts reliving the rehearsals of the theatre's glory days. And later in the second act, we are cast back in time to a thriving theatre, in full rehearsal...

A production overflowing with extravagance for you to enjoy!
