The world of Fred Deux

From the 20th September to 8th January 2018, at the Musée des Beaux-arts in Lyon

The world of Fred Deux (1924-2015) is very much a world apart. This unclassifiable, self-taught artist was a draughtsman, poet and writer all rolled into one. His childhood as part of a working-class family living in a cellar in Boulogne-Billancourt, his uncle's suicide and his youth as a factory worker have all had a deep impact on his life and work, both of which were fraught with one imperative: to “pass” from one world to another, one art form to another, from alienation to freedom. Art was to be his weapon, and in 1951 his companion Cécile Reims joined the fray.

The exhibition is the result of substantial donations made to the Musée des Beaux-arts.

Make the most of this retrospective and its 180 drawings to embark on a chronological and evolutionary journey through his world. His work, made up of dots and lines - which sometimes morphed into features and words - was inspired in particular by his fascination for the work of Paul Klee.

The exhibition also includes objects designed by Fred Deux and other artefacts of primitive art, which he collected.

Access to the Musée des Beaux-arts and the exhibition are included in the Lyon City Card

The Musée des Beaux-arts is open everyday except Tuesday and bank holidays, from 10 am to 6 pm (Friday from 10:30 am)
