Visuel Quais du Polar 2012

A major 3-day event with more than 110 crime fiction authors

From 6th to 8th April 2018

Mark Cusack, General Coordinator of the Quais du Polar

Right from the beginning, the goal was not simply to reproduce a book fair centred on crime fiction, of which there are already a great many, but to offer a genuine festive event based on crime and thrillers.

What kind of event is the Quais du Polar?

The idea was created in 2004, when a plaque was put up on the slopes of the Croix-Rousse hill in memory of Frédéric Dard. Right from the beginning, the goal was not simply to reproduce a book fair centred on crime fiction, of which there are already a great many, but to offer a genuine festive event based on crime fiction and thrillers.

What happens at the festival?

It’s a large city-wide event that is spread over three days; where we play host to more than 70 writers from across the globe.
At this literary festival, we have conferences and meetings on a host of current topics.
We have a lot of film showings at the Institut Lumière, but also a number of previews at the Comoedia and at the Pathé cinemas.
There are also many other crime-related events, and in particular the Grande Enquête (a whodunit investigation), a crime-based paper chase through the city. We work with a writer who creates a complete crime scenario with the characters played by actors. Participants then search for clues, both in public locations and in partner venues, in order to solve the mystery.

Is there a specific theme each year?

We try to offer a complete overview of current crime fiction. The idea is to avoid having a single theme that dominates the festival, and instead to focus our attention on a crime and thriller producing continent or country.

Our programme is gaining popularity worldwide with an vast number of international guest authors increasing every year.

Is Lyon an emblematic city in terms of crime and suspense?

It’s true that here in Lyon we’re famous for the “Gang des Lyonnais”, whose story recently came out in film. Lyon is a city that's wrapped in secrecy, with an underworld that’s spicy to say the least!
