Lyon: the new capital for electronic music

Sacha Mambo, a DJ from Lyon

As the resident DJ at Le Sucre and head of the Macadam Mambo label, Sacha Mambo is part of Lyon’s "new wave" in electronic music. He shares his best tips from the electro scene.

How did Lyon become a city synonymous with electronic music?

The electronic movement started here 10 years ago with the creation of the Nuits Sonores event. This was the time of electro dub like High Tone and DJ Agoria. Since then, Nuits Sonores has expanded to the extent that it has today become the most ambitious French electronic music festival. It has even been ranked as the world's second leading festival by Resident Advisor magazine!  Nuits Sonores  has developed a real electro culture, with the emergence of local artists and an excellent programme all year long in Lyon’s clubs. Over the last 3 or 4 years, Lyon has become a genuine electro capital and can certainly hold its own in comparison to other European cities.

Which are Lyon’s main clubs?

We’ve got some great electro clubs in Lyon:  l’Ambassade , le Club Transbo , la Plateforme , le Terminal  and for a year now  le Sucre ! This is THE club that everyone was so eagerly awaiting. Le Sucre was designed for sound with an excellent sound system and features a highly ambitious line-up. It can welcome up to 800 people in a fantastic setting with a huge terrace overlooking Confluence .

If you were advising someone planning to tour the clubs, what would be your recommended itinerary?

You can start by having a drink on the terrace at  Voxx , before exploring the nearby record stores, Groovedge and Emile. To enjoy a meal while listening to DJs, I would recommend  Kaffee Berlin . You can then spend the evening at Le Sucre… And if you've still got any energy left, Le Terminal or L’Ambassade are open until the early hours!

What's the secret of a good DJ?

As I see it, above all a good DJ should know how to get people dancing. I try to keep a balance between innovative music, but that makes you want to party. This was exactly what I had in mind with my roller disco night  at Le Sucre!
