This is "the place" for restaurants in Lyon, although it is quite a recent development. The street had been closed off to traffic progressively, making it accessible to pedestrians which has become extremely pleasant, attracting restaurants in the process. Today, there are around 40 restaurants in this cobblestone street made popular in the city centre.

So what can you find in Rue Mercière?

This is "the place to be" for restaurants in Lyon, although this is quite a recent development. Our bistro has been opened since 1974, as we all can remember quite a different atmosphere in the past. Up until the 1980s, Rue Mercière had a bad reputation, due to its prostitutes and the cheap hotels they occupied. However, the town council did an excellent job of revitalising the district. It was eventually closed off to traffic, making it accessible only to pedestrians and has become extremely pleasant, attracting restaurants in the process. Today, there are around 40 restaurants in this cobblestone street made popular in the city centre.

What makes this street so popular?

Both tourists and Lyon's residents alike love Rue Mercière as the atmosphere is so friendly and festive. During the summer months, the restaurants open their terraces out onto the streets, which is very pleasant, and in the winter they're decked out with fanciful decorations for the year-end celebrations such as, the Beaujolais Nouveau or the Fête des Lumières.

What sort of Lyonnais culinary specialities can be enjoyed in Rue Mercière?

You'll be spoiled for choice because there's plenty of great regional cuisine available in this street! You absolutely must try the hot sausage with lentils, pommes à l'huile, lyonnais chitterling sausage, pike quenelle, liver terrine, the tablier de sapeur (tripe) or the praline tart as a dessert.

You can also try the excellent seafood at the Bistrot de Lyon or at Moss, and the various other dishes that are recommended along the street. Nowadays, you can find something to suit every taste!
