plenty of visitors and bargain hunters come here to find that rare gem

Moïse Lecomte, 9th February, 2012

Moïse Lecomte, a bookseller, describes the charm of the booksellers' market on Quai de la Pêcherie

What can you find at the booksellers' market?

If you're interested in finding rare books, there's a place on the Quais de Saône which may interest you. Lots of visitors and bargain hunters come here to find that rare gem. This market has been going for 20 years now on the Quais de Saône. This is a high quality market. There are prices to suit all pockets. You can find a book priced at just one euro or something much more expensive and obviously much rarer.

What sort of customers visit the booksellers' market?

As the city of Lyon is registered as UNESCO heritage, the customer base tends to be very diverse. The booksellers' market is listed in the “Guide du Routard”. This is what attracts tourists here as they read that it's something they should definitely not miss. The locals come here because it's part of the scenery.

Why were the Quais de Saône chosen for this market?

This spot was chosen at the very outset when the market was created, certainly for the sheer charm of the quays. You have to bear in mind that several other markets are also located on the quays. You'll find the food market, the art market and the craft market. Taken together, this creates something of a mass effect. And of course, the river banks are naturally charming places to be.
