Putting the spotlight on Lyon for the 2010 Festival of Light

Fête des Lumières 2008, Cathédrale Saint-Jean

From Wednesday 8 to Saturday 11 December, 2010.

Combining popular traditions with technological innovations, the Festival of Light (Fête des Lumières ) is a major event in Lyon!

This free and inclusive festival is open to all!

You cannot fail to be surprised and enchanted by the 60 or so "lighting scenes" created thanks to the fertile imaginations of designers from the world over.

The most spectacular creations are to be found in the town centre, while you can discover more intimate and participative scenes in the town's various districts…

L'atrium de l'Hôtel de Ville - Fête des Lumières 2008

The Festival of Light highlights the town's outstanding architectural heritage, its rivers and its main monuments through a combination of fantastic scenes making use of lighting, video and audio attractions.

The continuous lighting and video effects, visual arts and creative audio features combine to help you discover the town as you have never seen it before.

Plan your visit!

Chevet de l'Eglise St-Nizier - Fête des Lumières 2007

The event programme in the town centre is identical for all 4 evenings .

If you prefer to avoid the crowds at the end of the week, plan your stay for Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 December. This will give you the chance to attend the opening of the festivities on December 8 , when the festive lighting in Place Bellecour will be turned on.

You can plan your stay to suit your tastes and preferences, to ensure that your visit to Lyon is a success.
You'll find well-situated accommodation to help you get the most from your evenings and plenty of ideas for visits and leisure activities to occupy your days at Lyon Résa.

The festival sites…

Fête des Lumières, fontaine des Jacobins

Don't miss:

The Presqu’île  (Peninsula) , where the key sites for the Festival of Light are being recreated with bold artistic and technical designs.

  • Place des Terreaux where you can discover the ever-impressive atmosphere created through the illumination of the Bartholdi Fountain and its horses.
  • Place Pradel and Place Lyautey , brought to life with a host of small lights!
  • The Fountain of the Jacobins is lit up. An astonishing sight!
Don't miss the bold projections to be admired at the Church of Saint Nizier
Place  des Célestins is the scene of an innovative mapping project involving the theatre building.
  • Place de la République  offers spectators a chance to admire the moving interplay of light and water.
  • The banks of the Saône  are getting an absolutely spectacular light-based facelift. Follow the trail!
Fête des lumières, Lac du Parc de la Tête d'Or

The Tête d’Or  Park  offers you an incredible trail waiting to be explored.

  • Relive the history of that famous month of December 1852 on the apses of the Cathedral of Saint Jean  and the Fourvière Basilica.  Take a stroll through the streets of Old Lyon.

At the Croix-Rousse, the Montée de la Grande Côte, a street from another age, brings you a look back at the early days of video games. Plenty of fun awaits!

  • Discover new and unusual locations such as the Gros Caillou featuring more intimate and modern attractions.
Lumignons de la Fête des Lumières

And as the Festival of Light is also a generous and originally religious festival, the Foyer Notre Dame des Sans Abris  homeless hostel will be the special guest for this 2010 event in Place Antonin Poncet with the Lumignons du Coeur  initiative (Candles of Hope), backed by a large number of volunteers. The money raised will be donated entirely to the Association.

Enjoy your visit to the Festival of Light in Lyon!
