Built by Auguste in 15 B.C, this is the France's oldest theatres (4700 places). In 119, the capacity was able to reach an impressive 10700 places. The two Roman theatres that stood on the Fourvière hillside, one large and one smaller, were built on the site where Lugdunum was founded in 43 BC. The vestiges of a district which housed artisans can also be seen. Every summer the Théâtre and the Odéon welcome the 'Nuits de Fourvière' festival, where a wide range of events and plays are put on show for the public to enjoy.
