Founded in 1863, it houses a major collection focusing exclusively on West African civilisations. Including ritual masks, fabrics, statuettes and musical instruments, it offers a unique insight into sub-Saharan cultures.
This collection has mainly been collected by the missionaries of the Society of African Missions, throughout their stay in West Africa. Through their collections has built this jewel of African heritage in Lyon, including objects made by people and diverse cultural groups such as the Dogon of Mali, the Senufo, Dan, the Wè or Krou Côte d'Ivoire, or the Ashanti of Ghana, the Yoruba of Nigeria and Benin. The panorama on these crops is very broad, since the collection contains objects of worship (masks, statuettes, etc. . ) Arts kingdom of Dahomey or objects of daily life as well. Over 2000 objects are on display at the museum on 750 m² , divided into 3 levels. Living space of dialogue , the museum offers original temporary exhibitions of ancient and contemporary African productions, from diasporas as the continent. Discover its library with 7,000 documents, open Wed, Thu, Fri : 2:30 pm-6 pm, online consultation via the museum's website. Entertainment and creative workshops for adults and children. The museum will close finally at the end of December 2017.
