Experiencing Duration

'This biennial will be an opportunity to check on the efficiency of the work of art today, in the light of a more global project: that of our own temporality, of our behaviour with regard to the present, the instant, the moment; to duration, acceleration and the end.
Because “Experiencing Duration” embraces real time and simultaneity, I wanted the Lyon Biennial to reach out to other cities in >Europe and garner feedback: from PAC (Milan), Portikus (Frankfurt), Tramway (Glasgow), Migros (Zurich) and the Palais de Tokyo (Paris), arts centres which mainly show work by France-based artists...
Addressing time was a way for us to draw up an inventory of the 1990’s, when art began to function as a sort of editing bay on which artists could reconstruct everyday reality.
They have tweaked the tempo at which forms change – pausing, looping, delaying, synchronising, slowing down and speeding up. For the artists of the 90’s, time is more a building material than a mere medium, and controlling the duration and the time protocols of exhibition has, like the controlling of space, become a major aesthetic issue.
This biennial seeks to reaffirm that a work of art is first and foremost an event before being a monument or a simple testimony; and that aesthetics are also a matter of energy…'

A FEW IDEAS FOR YOUR WALK:
Take a walk along the banks of the river Rhône, from the Raspail Square to the Park of the Head of Gold (Parc de la Tête d’Or), where the way in which the lake and the park have been lit up is quite fascinating.

On your way down to the Saint Paul railway station, discover a surprise show on the television tower.

|
From 5th to 8th December 2008
from 6pm until 1am
Throughout the whole city of Lyon
The 2008 “Fête des Lumières” festival will transform Lyon into a theatre of light, where almost 4 million visitors discover a city, shrouded in wintry weather, but colourized anew.
The programme for these 4 days includes the spectacular, but also and above all else the world of dreams and fairy tales.
The whole event is being orchestrated by artists such as Guillaume J. Plisson, “the light graffiti artist”, Bibi, the great hijacker of plastic material, and Patrice Warrener, an artist who for almost 20 years has been illuminating cities across the globe.
2008 will be the year of gentleness, poetry and to a degree, a return to childhood.

The place des Terreaux is reshaped by a small giant who plays with the Town Hall and the Palais Saint-Pierre, the Jacobins fountain is transformed into a gigantic fish mobile and then there are the banks of the Rhône, which are plunged into an incredible under water odyssey; these all are places presented in a different light to give the public magic and provoke contemplation.
As with every year, the city‘s districts have an important role to play.
Thanks to the amazing work undertaken by local associations, the community arts centres and the city’s inhabitants, but also thanks to the thoughtful participation of students from colleges of art, design and architecture, there are almost seventy artistic projects dotted across the whole city, and thus redesigning squares, facades, fountains and steps).
As a festival for the people, the “Fête des Lumières” festival will also give around a hundred lighting professionals the opportunity to meet each other at the “Meetings of light” colloquium.
The aim here is to exchange knowledge, debate topics connected with lighting and to look at the latest innovations available commercially.
So many subjects confirming Lyon’s ranking among the top cluster of Light cities.
Key figures for the “Fête des Lumières” festival:
4 million visitors expected.
70 light projects throughout the whole city.
8 million lumignons (small lights) sold in 2007.
100% occupancy rate in all the hotels in Lyon.
21,310 Vélo’v bikes hired on 8th December 2007.
325 areas illuminated throughout the year in Lyon.

X° Biennale de Lyon 2010 (Tenth Lyon Biennial) - Modern Art Exhibition
|
From September 16th 2009 to January 3rd 2010
Le spectacle du quotidien (The spectacle of the Everyday)
The Biennale de Lyon has become an unmissable event in the modern art world.
For the 10th staging of the exhibition, Hou Hanru, Commissioner and Thierry Raspail, Artistic Director, are putting the emphasis on “Le spectacle du quotidien”.
In the entertainment-focused society in which we live, modern art is involving itself in daily life.
It enables us to imagine suggestions for a better, freer world.
At a time of globalisation and financial crisis, this idea is especially relevant.
Artists re-invent the ordinary and turn it into something wonderful and unique, in order to create new ways to express complexity, diversity and interactivity.
The Tenth Biennale de Lyon explores this trend and puts it on display, through sculptures, paintings, videos, photographs or installations by around 50 international artists.
The Spectacle of the Everyday (le spectacle du quotidien) transforms entertainment and daily life at the same time!

Sens Interdits 2009 – International Theatre Festival
|
17th – 26th September 2009
Memory, identity and resistance
The first Sens Interdits festival brings questions of memory, identity and resistance, to the stage, particularly as they affect the European continent and its cultures.
This theatre of urgency and of necessity, while deeply political, remains free of ideology or propaganda.
Under the threat of a deformed, eclipsed or negated History, an entire generation is directing a light on to the past, so as to better illuminate the present.
Artists faced with war, religious conflict or exile, are exploring themes of otherness and borders, diversity and singularity as well as tolerance and fanaticism.

Géricault, a World of Madness
|
From April 21st to July 31st 2006
At Lyon Fine arts Museum
The Lyon fine Arts Museum is devoting an exhibition to Théodore Géricault (1791-1824), a major artist in French romanticism.
The Woman with the Monomania of Desire, acquired by the Lyon Fine Arts Museum in 1908, is at the origins of a project, which will bring together three of the five portraits in the monomania series (1819-1820): as well as the painting belonging to Lyon, The Kleptomaniac from the Ghent Fine Arts Museum and The woman with the monomania for gambling from the Louvre Museum, the other two portraits being unavailable.
The exhibition’s intention is to expand the notion of madness to a political point of view, by endeavouring to show that, in order to understand Géricault, we must consider him as a historic painter who possesses subtle capacities for using symbols and political allegories.
The exhibition will show numerous unknown works, highlighting Géricault’s particular view of his contemporaries at the dawn of the Romantic period, a view extremely critical of Napoleonic society and war that dominated this period in time.

|
The portraits of monomaniacs were to be not only witnesses of the birth of modern psychiatry, but also the logical finality of a republican aesthetical-political reflection on marginality, exclusion, poverty, the madness of war and desire for freedom.
In fourteen sequences, the whole exhibition, with over 140 works, show the very special way in which the artist viewed:
The Napoleonic epic: the military
The end of the Corsican ogre, the return of the Bourbons
Rome: Carnival and people in freedom
A race of bandits
Sacrifices and putting to death
Rebellious childhood
Political murders, events in everyday life and civil war
Desires
The Nation’s destruction and regeneration
Black sun
Portraits of ordinary people
Sovereignty of nations
A mad race
London and Paris: the birth of a new economic order.
Exhibition commissioners: Bruno Chenique, art historian and Sylvie Ramond, Director of the Fine arts Museum of Lyon.
Around the exhibition
The Éveil des peaux – “Skins awakening” - show

The programme puts the accent on young creation and companies who have never performed in Lyon before.
It also highlights shadow theatre, a living art located on the border between ancestral techniques and new technologies with its transformations of image, the appearance of virtual bodies, etc.
Each company has its own unique character and its own way of using light and space.
This year, the biennial festival is receiving a Spanish company, Cengiz Ozek Karagöz Turc, the Slavitchek association (a cartoon cinema putting puppets, shadow theatre and objects on stage), the traditional Royales Marionnettes Saint Gilloises from Belgium, and the Brazilian company Tato Criacao Cenico which offers an extremely moving show lit by candle light - luminous simplicity.
On the last night, the festival will be presenting a company from Berlin, the Puppetmastaz, in a HipHop show, sung and danced by puppets…
A fine illustration of the puppet’s status, a real link between tradition and modernity.
Five days to be “tasted without moderation” from the age of 18 months to 108 years!!!
The programme was purposely designed to appeal to all generations, with shows for youngsters from the age of 18 months upwards, a theatre of objects, sensations and suggestion (bright ambiance, soft music, objects…) and others aimed directly at teenagers and adults.
The different events…
Wednesday, April 26th: The inauguration of the Biennial at the Opera, with an exhibition by Francis Debeyre, and a performance of “Effigie”
Thursday, April 27th: Marionnettes bars/bars
Nothing other than a treasure hunt, a real trip full of fun through the Croix-Rousse.
Friday, April 28th: Soirée Cabaret, The puppets’ cabaret…
On the programme: humour, poetry, strange shapes and forms, grotesque faces…
The public is invited to eat, drink, laugh and even shed a tear.
Saturday, April 29th: The Night of Manipulation and Conjuring
Manipulation and conjuring is tackled in all its different forms, artistic (puppets, juggling, conjuring tricks…) and gastronomic, mental, scientific, medical, biological, mathematical, media or political… Fascinating!
From 7 pm onwards, evening and dining. At the Palais de Bondy.
Sunday, April 30th: Theatre in the street
Ten different shows to be watched by all the family

Nuits Sonores #4 _ 2006
|
24 - 28 May 2006
Lyon, France
The fourth edition of the Nuits Sonores Festival will be held in Lyon from May 24th to May 28th (the prefestival will begin May 18th).
This authentic panorama of the electronic musics and cultures, organized by the Arty Farty association, emerged as the most significant French electronic festival.
As every year, the festival will enter about fifty places in the city: concert halls, bars, clubs, but also galleries, cinemas, museums or emblematic places of the Lyon architectural heritage.
This year, the main reception places will be: Les Docks – Port Rambaud, the Rhône Swimming-pool, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Rectangle, the Ninkasi, the Villa Gillet...
A lot of performances will be organized directly outdoor, on the street, and on the different city squares.
More than the previous years, the Nuits Sonores team wants to strengthen the urban and ambulatory form of the festival, which favours meetings, movement and emulation.

Nuits sonores - Electronic panorama
The Nuits Sonores Festival is entirely dedicated to electronic musics and cultures.
Based on the multiplicity and diversity of the different electronic movements (techno, electronica, house, drum n’bass, breakbeat...), the Nuits Sonores programming also opens itself to all innovative musics that interact with electronic music: hip-hop, jazz, electro-rock, experimental musics...
Thus, more than 300 artists took part in the first two editions of Nuits Sonores.
Among the artists of the 2006 edition we can quote: Q Bert, Coldcut, Alan Vega, ESG, Andrew Weatherall, Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Nathan Fake, Trentemoller, Booka Shade, Michael Mayer, Adam Freeland, Pere Ubu, John Lord Fonda, Agoria, Richard Davis, The Hacker, The Silures, Jennifer Cardini, Dj Hell, Abe Duque, Jad Fair, Faust or Laurent Garnier, for an already sold-out all day long dj+live at the Rhone’s swimming pool.
Among the latest confirmed artists, Le Peuple de L’herbe and My Robot Friend are now also part of the bill.
The Circuit Electronique - Swiss touch
The free Circuit Electronique, second night of the festival, will allow the participants to deambulate in the city for 18 hours, between the different steps proposed by the festival in collaboration with the different structures (labels, associations, artists, clubs...) which contribute to the development of the electronic musics in Lyon.
In 2006, 9 steps are programmed with a focus on the swiss electronic scene.
The Carte Blanche – Paris is burning
Every year, the Nuits Sonores festival grants a Carte Blanche to an important European metropolis.
Reflecting a dynamic and innovative electronic scene, it is usually presented by an emblematic structure of the invited city.
Nuits Sonores decided to highlight the electronic music history of Paris.
The Parcours Associé
The Parcours Associé has the ambition to federate the galleries, museums, cultural institution or alternative groups in order to propose -through cinema, video, meetings, plastic arts...– a complementary, creative and new approach on the electronic cultures.
Images sonores
Another focus will be held on the idea that music is not just sound.
Therefore, the new specific part of the festival, called Images Sonores, concerns the development of all the new creative and technological approaches of v-jaying, video scratching or digital arts, from the strictly theorical point of view to the artistic performances on stage.
The Siestes Sonores
Day of closure of the festival, the Siestes Sonores invite a large audience to discover the electronic cultures within an outdoor and friendly atmosphere.
There will be various animations mingled with artistic performances.

Son of a Lyon master painter of Flemish origin, Jacques Stella departed for Florence at the age of 20, and then went on to Rome, where he earned a reputation for being one of the best painters in the city.
Stella spent a great deal of time with Simon Vouet and Nicolas Poussin and became their close friend.
In 1634, Stella moved to Paris where he lived until his death in 1657 and where he obtained his greatest success: Richelieu named him “accredited painter to the king”.
Stella received order after order for his work: retables and reredos for the churches of Paris, paintings for art-lovers’ private rooms, drawings for the royal printing house…
The force of his retables, the elegance of his compositions, the delicate touch of his drawings, the refinement of his colour harmonies, all were acclaimed by his contemporaries.
Stella, whose work was essentially religious, also took an interest in showing everyday life, as proven by his many drawings.

At the beginning of the 18th century, Lyon’s libraries were full of Italian manuscripts, mainly from Rome and Naples. They were most certainly brought back from Italy by Jesuit priests or travelling music lovers and are proof of the attraction that Italian culture had for the inhabitants of Lyon.
Lyon’s musicians appreciated the extreme sensitiveness of the Italian masters’ vocal and instrumental works.
Sometimes painters of the emotions of the Virgin Mary, vulnerable and human, sometimes eulogists of love in secular works.
Celestial or carnal, the purest emotions are expressed by their most natural vector: the human voice.

Impressionism and the Birth of the Cinematograph
|
Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon
Exhibition: 15 April - 18 July 2005
In partnership with the Institut Lumière
The reciprocal influences between photography and Impressionism
|
+ Read next
|
In recent years, the systematic study of the reciprocal influences between photography and Impressionism has brought to light the common denominators of these two modes of artistic creation: an insistence on realism and objectivity, and an analysis of light, both in the choice of subjects - the primacy of urban views, scenes from daily life, a fascination with the industrial world, etc. - and in their technical treatment, from precise, skilful framings to a search for the perfect control of lighting effects.
Through documented comparisons of the relationships between these three media - painting, photography and the cinema - Impressionism and the Birth of the Cinematograph proposes a new understanding of the way in which one of the major arts of our image-and-language civilisation came into being.
The nascent cinema's debt to the Impressionists' techniques is clear, notably in the work of Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and Auguste Renoir, himself father to one of France's most important film-makers.
It was the Lumière brothers who developed the first colour photographs - the famous "autochromes" - and in 1895 they invented the cinematograph.
Sons of an amateur painter, they themselves were art lovers, and it is clear from their work that numerous visual references to contemporary paintings were present in their minds.

Le Concert de l'Hostel Dieu Carissimi’s name is closely linked to the origins of Oratorio.
These masterpieces of the sacred baroque music, which are conserved in the Lyon Municipal Library as manuscript copies, give the occasion to celebrate as it must be done, the 400 years of the birth of that Maestro of the Italian music.
The sacred stories are conceived as mini operas, inspired of the Ancient testament.
Jonas, Ezechias and Jephte, short theatrical narratives are given rhythm with action sequences, and moralizing passages.
A superb casting valorises this very expressive and contrasted music, with the British tenor Howard Crook famous for his interpretations of the sacred baroque repertoire.
Le Concert de l'Hostel Dieu is an ensemble of professional musicians playing on period instruments, founded and directed by Franck-Emmanuel Comte.
Since its creation in 1992, le Concert de l’Hostel Dieu has worked on Italian and Spanish baroque repertoire producing concerts from Mediterranean composers.
The ensemble is now focusing more especially on Italia baroque, organising its repertoire around two of the more creative cities in the 16th and 17th century : Roma and Venice.

December 7th – 10th 2005
Lyon, a City dedicated to light!
|
+ Read next
|
Every year since 1852 on December 8th, the people of Lyon spontaneously line up thousands of candles on their windowsills and balconies.
Real popular enthusiasm has joined up with the original religious festival to form an event that has become an important facet of city life.
As the years have gone by, the festival has continuously grown in size and importance and the participation of world-famous designers is a clear sign that the event is becoming increasingly famous on international levels.
Now covering a period of four days, it brings life to all the districts in the city and gives over 3 million visitors the opportunity of discovering a city transcended by light.
The theme for this year’s edition has not yet been decided upon, but the event will be realigned to stress the links between urban space and city life:
- An increasing number of sites in the Presqu’île, with set-ups for enhancing the charm of the Rhone and Saone river banks.
- More conviviality and public participation especially on the evening of December 8th with a giant scenography of candles on the Place Bellecour.
Festival of Light…2005 Edition…
In the framework of the World Year of Physics, The French Lighting Association is organising an exhibition in the Galerie des Terreaux, on the theme of “physics in urban lighting” and will offer the public a light-hearted explication of physical phenomena related to light In the heart of the City…
Sites not to be missed
This year, honour will be paid to the “traboules” through the efforts made by teams of students from the City of Lyon’s architectural, lighting and fine arts schools.
• The traboules on the slopes of the Croix Rousse
• The Place des Terreaux
• The Place Louis Pradel
• The church of Saint Nizier
• The banks of the Rhone
• The Place des Célestins
• The Place Bellecour
• The cathedral of Saint Jean

In the different “arrondissements”…

According to him, light and relief are offered to the hopeful ones, at the end of an exhausting life.
Thus his motets, “Sterberlieder”, aren’t dark or painful pieces of music.
Architecturally luminous and full of Italianism, each one of those great choir-frescoes are built around a central choir. It reflects Bach’s deep faith in God. Two cantatas for alto come in between the motets in order to bring the necessary breath to this program full of virtuosity.

Le Plaisir au Dessin
|
October 12, 2007 – January 14, 2008
At the Lyon Fine Arts Museum
Carte blanche to the philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy
An original, rare exhibition that takes a look at drawing from the point of view of pleasure, of desire... forgetting the history of art, just showing that the pleasures of drawing belong to every period in history.
The gestural pleasures of the person drawing, tracing, crossing out, pencilling and scribbling, occupying the space available, filling his page, searching for shapes ... Pleasure born from tension.
Pleasure for the hand and the eye, pleasure given by the material, by the shape that bursts forth from lines repeated again and again, that emerges from the chaos of crossings out ... after hours spent searching for its ideal shape.
Pleasure in drawing, the passion of the body, impulses of love and war, of taboos and the indescribable.
Raw basic energy bursts forth from drawings and their unfinished nature, spontaneous expression, beauty full of strength and sensuality.
Some 150 drawings are presented ... of every style and by major artists from the 16th century up to today: Michael-Angelo, Raphael, Watteau, Ingres, Delacroix, Seurat, Picasso, Matisse…
Explore and experiment the pleasures of drawing in all their aspects.
A rendezvous of emotion.

Shows, like GENES 01, from the Collectif Cékoisthéâtre!
No stages, no theatres; people are at the heart of the action and the actors are people, not characters!
It’s a must see.
And on top of these, there will be lectures and round tables: the history of electronic music, the Hadopi 2 law (to prevent illegal file sharing over the internet), problems associated with discs…
A great programme for a festival which breaks the mould!

One of the orchestra’s founding principles, along with musical excellence, is the training & promotion of the young, which is why the ONL’s young soloists will be centre-stage during this week, as the opening concert on the 22 November at 8:30pm is specially devoted to them.
To celebrate music at an extremely high level, & to mark it’s open-mindedness & influence in Europe, the orchestra has chosen to invite two of the foremost European orchestras, with whom it has woven a strong network: the Birmingham symphony Orchestra, on the 25 November at 8:30pm and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, on the 27 November at 4pm.
Resolutely open & close to the Lyon audience, the ONL consulted the public last season to ask for their help in choosing the program for the Anniversary Concert.
They opted for Wagner (the ghost ship Overture ), Prokofiev (Symphonie N°1, « classic ») & Dvorak (The Symphony of « The New World »), which will take place on the 24 November at 8:30pm & the 26 November at 6pm.
The exhibition "The 100 years of an orchestra: from the Society of Grand Concerts to the Orchestra national de Lyon" will be held in the Atrium of the Auditorium de Lyon, from the 22 November 2005 to 19 March 2006.
It is open from 22 to 25 November 2005 during the ticket office opening hours (11am - 6pm) & is accessible to spectators on the concert nights.
It is also open during the open days of the 26 & 27 Novembre 2005.
The exhibition is also open during the concerts: from 4pm to 6pm on the 10, 17 & 31 December 2005, 5, 21 & 28 January 2006, 4 & 18 February and 11 & 18 March.
Other opening hours: from 6:30pm to 8:30pm the 3 & 31 December & the 7 January. Closed 24 December, 14 January, 11 & 25 February, 4 March.
Scenography : Jean Haas

Lyon’s winter trip in music 2007
|
January18 th to 20th, 2008
Salle Molière and the Fine Arts Museum
This year, take a winter trip in music devoted to Mozart and the New Vienna School.
In the same programme, the chamber music festival links the music of Mozart, a model of classicism, to that of composers from the New Vienna school, a model of the break with the past, but which, even so, does not reject its heritage.
It is a dialogue between tradition and novelty and a panorama of the rich variety of these movements, which opened the way to the music of today.
For this edition, the festival is opening its doors to the plastic arts, which explains why you are invited to the concert at the Fine Arts Museum to see pictorial and musical works under a new light.
Six concerts are programmed in 3 days, with the possibility of brunching between two concerts on Sunday morning to maintain the convivial atmosphere that is so typical of this event.
Do not miss this new edition of a winter trip in music.

Vienna has always been a home of musical creativity.
Two schools predominate: the first in the 18th century and the second (or new) in the first half of the 20th.
The first school unites the three major classical composers: Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven.
The second brings together Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern, adulated or detested forerunners of contemporary music.

Polychorality and magnificence in San Marco

The Concert de l’Hostel Dieu A vocal and instrumental ensemble
Franck-Emmanuel Comte Artistic management
Between Monteverdi and Vivaldi, the city of the Doges has become an essential landmark in the history of baroque music. Religious music is evolving and turning away from traditional polyphonies.
Monteverdi enriches the repertoire of sacred music by adding a theatrical dimension, which has its finest form of expression in polychorality. Inspired by the joyously festive atmosphere of Advent, Monteverdi, Schütz and Gabrieli bedeck their motets with shimmering colours and turn holy texts into real firework displays.
Pursuing its exploration on the influence of Italian music on major European cities, following on from Rome, this year, the concert de l’Hostel Dieu will be spending the season in Venice.
Over and above the splendour of the polyphonies and instrumental virtuosity, the Venetian school has especially marked the history of baroque art by its modernism, its inventiveness, its taste for theatricalising all forms of music and its involvement in social life.
As a result, extremely varied forms of talent were to flourish in the heart of the City of the Doges and end up by being a decisive influence that has gone beyond all the limits of time and fashion.
This is how they have contributed in building up a legend of the city of Venice, which also became a master in the art of diffusing sound throughout space.

For this 6th edition, the range of sites has been changed, the choice of venues renewed.
The event’s priorities stay the same though: geared to offering a programme that is high-quality and open, plus an exciting chance to move freely from place to exuberant place in the city.

Picasso, Matisse, Dubuffet, Bacon… The masters of modern art are on show - Exhibition
|
At the Lyon Fine Arts Museum (Musée des Beaux arts de Lyon)
From October 10th 2009 to February 15th 2010
The Fine Arts Museum is exhibiting its collection of modern art, one the richest in France.
Certain works are unknown to the public.
The exhibition has been enriched by works lent by galleries, private collections and foundations.
All in all, almost 180 works from the 20th century recount major aspects in the main movements of modern art.
Fauvism (Dufy, Marinot, Marquet), the Russian avant-garde (Gontcharova, Larionov, Jawlensky), cubism (Braque, Gleizes, la Fresnay, Hayden, Survage), realistic representations from between the two wars (still lifes from the 40’s by Picasso and Matisse), French non-geometric abstract art from the 50’s and 60’s (Bazaine, Manessier, Le Moal, Bryen, Bran van Velde, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, de Staël).
Without forgetting Dubuffet, and the fact that the Lyon Fine Arts Museum was the first French museum to acquire one of his paintings: the Blond Landscape.
The evolutions, influences, movements, and historic, political and moral contexts in which all these works were created are evoked by a theme path, as well as the artists’ relationships with colour, space, light or matter... all in support of works whose value has been optimally enhanced by judicious museography.
A really magnificent exhibition, an absolute must!

10th “Musiques en scène” _ 2006 Biennial Festival
|
7th – 26th March 2006
In March, the Musiques en Scène Biennial Festival will be taking up its quarters in a number of different settings to offer us numerous musical creations.
A link between different art forms, music will be “on the move”, occupying both time and space, under lighting and on stage…
In 2006, Musiques en Scène will be reinforcing the idea that gestures, instruments and space all take part in the process of writing music, a condition that enables the listener to physically experience the concert, and which is both unique and unpredictable.
Priority has been given to new works and the repertoire of the last thirty years.
On the programme: concerts, operas, shows, musical events, but exhibitions and sound installations as well.
We have selected works that are accessible to all, from the most experienced music lover to the real novice in contemporary music…
Try it and see, you’re sure to enjoy it…

Les Voix du Sacré, a stage-decorated concert
20H30, Centre Théo Argence - Saint Priest
Solistes de Lyon - Bernard Tétu
Benjamin Carat, cello
Bernard Tétu, conductor /
Pierre-Alain Jaffrennou, scenography and video
Victor Severino, sound
Etymologically, what is sacred is linked with what is religious, in opposition to what is profane. On a wider level, it reflects mankind’s permanent quest for universal values, spirituality and immateriality.
"Les Voix du Sacré" put man’s thirst for transcendence and music in perspective through various inspirations and approaches to composing music. The human voice, a timeless instrument, occasionally associated with a cello and various technological devices is at the centre of a concert enhanced by images and lighting.
Ch. Mennesson, Solem (2000), J. Nordin, Cri du berger (2004) création française, M-A. Ingegneri, Responsoria Hebdomadae Sanctae (Tenebrae) (1550), P. “Chroma V” – Rebecca Saunders Concert - installation
Ensemble Contrechamps
New version for several instrumental groups
A Grame- Musiques en Scène Biennial Festival order
“Re-written” for every performance, Chroma merges into the setting where it is being performed: textures and sound surfaces are placed side by side depending on the architecture in place. Musicians from the Contrechamps ensemble are scattered throughout the Chapelle du Musée in small groups: balconies, the porch, stairways, arches, sometimes hidden, sometimes visible.
“Chroma” means “colour of an extreme purity or of a great intensity”. Therefore Rebecca Saunders’ approach is similar to that of a painter: after writing the music for each group, she puts the partitions on the walls of her room like pictures, to help her establish the relationships between the different ensembles. The different groups work “like primary colours that intermingle or which are in contrast with each other”.
Chroma V will be played twice consecutively, with an interval between the two performances so that the public can choose a fixed listening point at the second performance to try and hear the work as a whole. Duration: 2 x 25 minutes
Price: 10 € (entrance to the museum and 3 concerts by Contrechamps at 3 pm, 3.40 pm and 6 pm). Concert organised together with the Museum, with support from the ONDA.

Claudio Ambrosini -“Il Canto della Pelle (Sex Unlimited)”
Melodramma giocoso in due parti e un labirinto.
Chamber opera for four soloists, actress, dancer, an instrumental ensemble, video and electronic sound. Creation Ordered by the State for the “Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain” Claudio Ambrosini, creation, libretto and music Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain - Percussions & keyboards of Lyon Conductor, Stefano Celeghin A. Foniadakis, choreographer and performer In the context of the Biennial Festival, Claudio Ambrosini has created, Il Canto della pelle (Sex Unlimited): sex is the vital energy, the secret and underground force that sets the universe in motion.
This ambulatory opera has been conceived as a spiritual and cultural journey crossed by several main dimensions: nature, religion, society and art. Several characters, from the most allegorical beings to persons you see in the street every day, wend their way through the opera.
Words, images and people guide the spectator-auditor through a maze. The idea “of experiencing”, of changing from one emotion or climate to another can be tested in the most sensitive fashion and we always find that we come back to a personal, unique and intimate status. Between an act of reproduction and an act of perversion, Il Canto della pelle sings sexual desire as if it were the mainspring of a world in motion throughout history and in everyday life.
Recommended for over 16 year olds
Duration: about 1h30
Prices: 15 and 10 €
Reductions are available with the Lyon City Card, except at the Opera.

To persuade his father to accept the idea of his marriage, Mozart created this mass, officially as an offering to God to thank Him for being able to live a marriage of love.
He had to wring consent for the marriage from a father who was against this union; what better for convincing a musician as believing as his father than to compose a mass?
This mass could have been just a fine mass like so many others composed by Mozart; but no, it as an exceptional mass with a double choir, 4 soloists, several major fugues ...
A work “perhaps even more powerful than the Requiem” in the words of Bernard Tétu.
Opposite this great classical score, another vision of divine glorification is also on the programme: that of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt (born in 1935). His Te Deum for three choirs is an original work, highly successful in musical terms and which is conquering music-lovers beyond the frontiers of Europe.
Two magnificent works, a brilliant interpretation, total bliss!

Musée des Tissus & des arts décoratifs, Lyon
Léonard, a man, a style, an international success
Léonard, a label linked to flowers, orchid in peculiar, and to textile printing...
Daniel Tribouillard has given French fashion a fresh and passionate influence.
It is this passion, these pages of French fashion history and the success of an entrepreneur that the Musée des Tissus and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Lyons, in association with Maison Léonard, the Grand Lyon and Lyon Vision Mode, presents in this exhibition that will run from April 7th to October 8th.

Léonard, in short…
A Man…
In 1954, Daniel Tribouillard joined the firm Jacques Léonard, specialized in creation and marketing of fabrics for the Haute-Couture, as the Managing and Artistic Director of Léonard Fashion, which Daniel Tribouillard specialized in the top of the range ready-to-wear.
The young firm is launched thanks to the invention of the fully-fashioned technique, allowing to print knit, pullovers, which had been amazingly successful from the end of the 1950s.
Daniel Tribouillard uses and optimizes the traditional techniques of "à la Lyonnaise" printing to renew his creations and search new visual effects as with fabrics.
Since the 1970s, he has been printing silk jersey according to the technique called "coupé-cousu".
In 1976, he invented the silkover fully fashioned, a simple association between the pullover and the "carré de soie".
Women are appealed by his drawings and the orchid becomes progressively the emblem of the company.
Finally in 1991, the patent of the reversible necktie is registered.
From 1998, he has conquered different countries in the East of Europe.
Finally, in 2005, he opened in Ginza, the fancy area of Tokyo, the 106th Léonard boutique in Japan.
A Style…
The singularity of Léonard, create like an artist
Daniel Tribouillard is not a fashion designer who draws dresses but an artist whose works of art become dresses.
The Léonard's style is unique and peculiar. It is identified by many recurrent patterns like geometrical drawings inspired at the same time by Coptic art and Aztec art whose geometrical and symmetrical compositions constitute a significant example.
The world of Tribouillard is a garden with oriental flowers, in particular with orchids, his favourite flower which has become the trademark of the Léonard label since its creation.
He is also influenced by images of safari animals.
The respect that Léonard has for Japan, after France, his second country and culture, is also reciprocated.
With 106 boutiques in Japan, Tribouillard is the only westerner to have had the precious right to the secret of making traditional Japanese kimonos, when in 1983 Japan asked him to design a line of kimonos under the Léonard label. He was immediately successful and Japanese culture was enriched with a touch of the West…

Porta Orientalis – The Concert of the Hostel Dieu
|
January 31st 2010 at 5.00 pm and February 2nd & 3rd 2010 at 8.30 pm
Church of Saint-Bruno les Chartreux, Lyon
Between East and West, succumb to the charms of popular Neapolitan polyphonies
Traditional religious polyphonies: Stabat Mater, Miserere, Tota pulchra es…
Tarantellas and popular songs: La Cirenella, La Carpinese, Li percurer…
Naples, gateway to the East: this is a fact in the 16th century!
Naples, a cosmopolitan city, colourful and often violent, is a centre of commercial, cultural and political exchange.
The Neapolitan Renaissance songs conjure up the presence of pirates off the coast, and frequent kidnapping and pillaging.
If official art is taught in the city’s four large conservatories, popular polyphonic traditions accompany all the religious festivals. These intense festive moments mix profane tarantellas with religious polyphonies, containing eastern Mediterranean hues.
They are transmitted orally from one generation to the next and reply to the frenzied, persevering rhythms the street songs and popular tarantellas which ring out on the churches’ forecourts.
Faithful to its objectives, the Concert of the Hostel Dieu, offers us an exceptional opportunity for rediscovering little-known areas of our ancient musical heritage.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
At the beginning of the Century of Lights, Lyon endowed itself with first-class musical institutions, which contributed to the city’s international reputation, notably the Opera (created by Lully) and the Fine Arts Academy.
Every year at the Jesuit College (Trinity Chapel), the aldermen of Lyon celebrated Louis XV’s return to health.
On this occasion, motets were ordered from famous musicians (Mondonville or Estienne…).
Convents were not excluded from this intense musical activity.
The Cordeliers convent accommodated Gouffet, the locally well-known organist and composer. His talent contributed to the musical quality of the religious services and to diffusing works created by his contemporaries.
Rameau was employed at the Augustinian Convent for five years. He composed his first major motets and several cantatas there. Leclair remained mainly in Paris, but his birth in Lyon and the prodigious activity of his family contributed to Lyon’s blend in Franco-Italian tastes.
The Concert de l'Hostel Dieu is conducted by Franck Emmanuel Comte.
• March 7th 2010 at 5.00 pm at the Lantern Temple, 10 rue Lanterne, Lyon 1st
• March 9th &10th 2010 at 8.00 pm at Lyon II Grand Amphitheatre

Jazz à Vienne Festival 2006
|
From June 29 to July 13 The 26th
In Vienne Roman Theatre and other various places in the city.
Jazz à Vienne evokes the dynamism of this music which still remains so creative enthusiastic, youthful, and is ever more present in the Rhône-Alpes region, particularly rich in jazz music, with various festivals, all the year round.
2006 will give the city of Vienne the opportunity to rediscover some very talented artists: Sonny Rollins, George Benson, Carla Bley, Gilberto Gil, Joe Zawinul, Dianne Reeves and others like Wynton Marsalis, but also more youthful hopes that will “brave” the different festival stages.
From June 29 to July 13, Jazz à Vienne will celebrate its ever more colourful 26th edition for all tastes and ages.
We wish you a happy festival!

In 2006, the programme will feature three foundation stones:
First, the creation of “La Tectonique des Nuages” (“Cloud Tectonics”) with a literary adaptation by François Rancillac and original music by Laurent Cugny, adapted from José Rivera’s play (the author of the “The Motorcycle Diaries”).
This jazz opera will be presented in its “oratorio” version (as our classical music friends say, i.e. without staging and scenery).
Then, the highlighting of a certain number of historic saxophonists.
These tremendous musicians have written some of the legendary pages of jazz music of the past sixty years. Sonny Rollins, Yusef Lateef, Houston Person, Benny Golson, Ricky Ford, Bunky Green and Charlie Mariano.
A very vibrant tribute paid to the city of New Orleans, the emblematic cradle of jazz that recently suffered from hurricane Katrina and the subsequent flooding. This tribute to the Crescent City’s musical culture is presented in the form of a triptych.
There will be Wynton Marsalis, the high priest of New Orleans jazz, his native city, then the Neville family to evoke the fundamental links between traditional jazz from Louisiana and soul, funk, rap, blues, rhythm’ n’ blues (or even reggae) music that is popular in New-Orleans today.
To complete this tribute, this year the famous Closure night on July 13 will be entirely dedicated to the different musical styles born and developed in the Crescent City and Louisiana.
Otherwise, everything will still be very present, with jazz in all its states and styles (from traditional to the most modern jazz, like John Scofield, John Zorn and the Belmondo brothers) with Blues, Gospel, Brazilian and Cuban music, Funk…
And of course, these fabulous encounters between great historic figures and extremely talented young musicians to be discovered urgently.
La Scène de Cybèle offers free concerts every day from 4:30pm to 8pm and every Sunday from 4pm to 7pm.
A gospel celebration will take place in St Maurice’ s cathedral on Sunday 2nd july at 10:30am …

5th Biennial Festival of Music on Stage
|
From March 1st to March 21st 2010
in Lyon
For 3 weeks, 45 composers from 16 countries, 15 video-makers, 74 works and 10 new creations, to celebrate contemporary creations.
The 2010 Music on Stage biennial gives us the opportunity of discovering twenty or so works by the female Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, who has been given the place of honor.
Her creativity has been strongly influenced by technology, IT and electronics and has given birth to original, colorful, rich and varied works.
Her opera “Emilie” is presented as a world première.
It is a production and an order placed by the Lyon National Opera Company.
The Biennial festival not only creates gangways between different forms of artistic creation represented by music, image and video, but not forgetting literature, it also proposes concerts and shows by Pierre Jodlowski and Alexandros Markeas, together with the following composers and musicians Michel Van der Aa, Raphaël Cendo, Samuel Sighicelli, Michael Jarrell, Martin Matalon, the Bubar trio, Roland Auzet, or even Rioijy Ikeda… with a recurrent theme for this 5th edition – the fall.
The Biennial festival mixes genres, styles, aesthetics and points of view.
It also brings new talent to the forefront via the Forum of Young Creation, with the Ircam, the Lyon Intercontemporary Orchestral Ensemble and the CNSMDL.

8è Nuits Sonores / The 8th Sound Nights – Electronic and Indie Festival
|
From May 12th to 16th 2010
At different venues throughout the city of Lyon
Warning! Not for non-night-owls!
The Nuits Sonores are back for a long weekend of music and festivities!
Based on the theme of urbanity, this 8th edition is really promising. As always, the festival takes possession of the most unusual places: obsolete industrial areas, the Rhone swimming pool, the “Marché gare” concert hall and the park at Gerland, but also major cultural institutions such as the Auditorium or the Célestins theatre as well… without forgetting all the bars, public squares and streets, for “The Nuits Sonores” is an urban festival, free, open and mobile, which distils its unique atmosphere throughout the whole city, favoring encounters and discoveries.
High-spots… This year, “carte blanche” is offered to the city of Montreal with an exhibition, concerts, films, brunch, and a stand on Montreal’s flourishing musical culture.
The German Music Panorama presents no less than 17 German artists.
Throughout the festival, the Nights follow “sound aperitifs”, “all day long” sessions, sound images and other sound siestas with gastronomic surprises as an added extra.
On the second night, follow the electronic circuits for discovering numerous artists at the 14 successive stops, all entirely free-of-charge.
Lastly, take a visit to the Extras, the fringe festival for seeing and listening to young talents.
Also go and see Mini Sonores (Mini Sound), a festival at the heart of the festival, especially devoted to the 4 to 10 year-olds
During the Nuits Sonores, the whole city will be vibrating.
You can’t escape it and so much the better!

Arthur Honegger – King David, by the Lyon Oratorio Choir
|
Friday, 28th May 2010 At the Grand Temple Bernard
Tétu directs the Lyon Oratorio Choir and Military Music Harmonic Orchestra for the biblical oratorio by Arthur Honegger: King David He also invites the public to sing along in certain choral parts of this symphonic psalm in three parts.
In this way he revives the work’s “democratic” aspect.
Honegger always wanted to use the music to reach a wide public.
King David is one of his masterpieces. He chose a biblical tale, part of collective imagination, and dealt with it with brio and colour.
The narrative by René Morax, written in 1921, underlines the brutality of the fratricide wars with which the Bible is scattered.
Professional soloists and instrumentalists, an excellent amateur choir and a narrator who links the scenes, giving the work naïve spontaneity, are at the service of a work full of brilliance and exaltation.

Bram and Geer van Velde – Deux peintres, un nom (Two painters, one name) - Exhibition
|
Open until August 2nd
Musée des Beaux-arts de Lyon (Lyon Fine Arts Museum)
The museum offers a comparative view of two major artists of the 20th century, the brothers Bram van Velde (1895-1981) and Geer van Velde (1898-1977), whose work evolved far away from the aesthetic preoccupations of their times.
United by their name and the way they were uprooted from their initial environment, the two brothers marked the 20th century by works as different as they are characteristic of each of them.
An 18-stage visit presents about 160 works that enable the two artist brothers to be better known and compared with each other, and enable their choices, encounters, influences and evolutions to be followed so as to understand the works created by each of them.
This fine, colorful exhibition throws a new and extremely interesting light on the two painters and their works.
Not to be missed.

“1945-1949. Repartir à zéro, comme si la peinture n’avait jamais existé” (Starting from scratch, as
|
From the 24th October 2008 to the 2nd February 2009
At the Lyon Museum of Fine Arts
This large exhibition presents the art of 1945-49, in Europe and North America.
The artists of the West were temporarily united, until the start of the Cold War, and felt that they had to start from scratch, to recreate an art that would be stripped of the ideologies of the early 20th Century and the shocks of the Second World War.
In Europe and America, the experimental techniques, marked by primitivism and automatisme, in painting, sculpture and photography, flourished in a diverse and free artistic environment.
The exhibition presents some 180 works, including pieces by Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Nicolas de Staël, Hans Hartung, Pierre Soulage and Lucio Fontana.

Cités végétales, un autre possible (Green cities, a different choice) – Exhibition by Luc Schuiten
|
Until July 18th 2010
At “la Sucrière”
The vision of the Belgian architect Luc Schuiten on the cities of the future is fascinating, poetic, with a touch of humour, but scientific as well, which is what makes it so interesting!
Luc Schuiten is doing research work on the city of tomorrow, especially in biomimetism, “the art of taking inspiration from nature for making innovations”.
Discover his ecological conception of the cities of the future, through all the models, videos, drawings and reports available – a conception where plants, omnipresent, are used as living building material…
Luc Schuiten shows the evolution of urban development and means of aerial and surface transport from 1850 to 2150, and exhibits his views of different Lyon neighbourhoods, such as the Part-Dieu, on a 2100 horizon.
At a time of sustainable development and ecology, the vast exhibition shows, as we progress along a natural path in the heart of green cities, that man can live in harmony with nature, and a brake can be put on the increasing scarcity of energy resources by adopting new models and behaviours.
Interesting, magnificent, full of hope and surprising!

Prisoners of War
|
Until 15 March 2009
At the Centre for the History of the Resistance and Deportation (CHRD)
The history of a community held captive French prisoners of war are practically lost from the collective memory.
There are two reasons for that: the humiliation of the defeat in 1940 and the collaboration which followed, both connected in peoples’ consciousness.
Almost two million French people were affected by captivity.
This exhibition is based on the remarkable donation of more than 60 portraits made by a prisoner of Stalag VIII C.
The visitor is struck by the gripping solemnity of their gazes and their desperation.
In the CHRD’s collections, there is an excellent display of propaganda material, and we can retrace a great number of personal histories.
Throughout, the same sentiment is kindled, a mixture of distress and powerlessness, in a climate of disinformation and loss of liberty.
We discover the incredible vitality used to reinvent a familiar world; the creativity, the solidarity or the spirituality. For the boldest among them, escape remained the ultimate solution, irrespective of the price to be paid.
Finally, we assess implicitly, the impact that the lot of these prisoners had on a majority of French people, whose lives were turned upside down, adding to the difficulties that the Occupation imposed.
This rich and diverse exhibition sets a precedent, allowing us to appreciate to its full extent, a hidden chapter of our history.
A must-see.

II duello amoroso, G F Handel
|
Wednesday 4 February 2009, the Church of St-Bruno-les-Chartreux
Sunday 8 February 2009, the Chapel of the Trinity
Handelian Divas and Castratos: the shadowy side
With these two concerts, the Concert de l’Hostel Dieu offers us the opportunity of a sublime immersion into the universe of the Baroque!
An immersion into the fascinating and passionate world of the castratos and divas, once adored as living gods. Sides of light and shadow…
An immersion into the world of the great characters that people the Old Testament and Antiquity. These mysterious and tortured heroes and heroines provided Handel, master of the lyrical art, with the inspiration for some exceptional scores, like Armida, Rinaldo, Orlando or La Lucrezia.
These marvellous roles built the careers of the great divas of Baroque song and of the castratos which are now lost to us.
An immersion in two of Lyon’s magnificent Baroque buildings…
The Concert de l’Hostel Dieu could no better illustrate the theme of its season: “Chiaroscuro, between shadow and light, discovering a new program”.
Not to be missed!

Bruckner, Mass in D
|
Wednesday 25 and Friday 27 March 2009, 8 p.m.,
at the Crypt of the Fourviere Basilica, Lyon 5
The Choeur et Orchestre XIX, conducted by Jean-Philippe Dubor, presents Bruckner’s Mass in D minor.
Bruckner, an admirer of Wagner, was a man of doubts and uncertainties, a composer who was never satisfied, and also a man of deep religious beliefs.
Through its fervour and its spiritual contemplation, the Mass in D minor is a reflection of his faith; and through its faultless polyphony, its ingenious modulations, its perfect harmony and its inspired orchestration, the work, written in November 1864, is also typical of its composer.
This mass, with its consummate beauty, finally thrust Bruckner onto the Austrian musical scene. It was performed repeatedly for the Viennese Court and in public concerts.
An additional piece is also presented for the evening: Brahms’ Rhapsody for alto solo, an illustrious work of somber beauty - moving and intimate - from a musician who stood at the boundary between classicism and romanticism.
A wonderful evening in prospect.

La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi
|
March 21st, 23rd and 31st March 2007
Salle Rameau
Opera in concert version
XIX Choir and Orchestra
Conducted by Jean-Philippe Dubor
La Traviata is one of Giuseppe Verdi’s most famous operas, inspired by La Dame aux Camélias – The Lady of the Camellias – written by Alexander Dumas, a study on the morals of the time.
Today, "La Traviata", a romantic opera “par excellence” is a phenomenal success, but in 1853, it received a more than cool reception and the work had to be played in 17th century costume to be accepted by the public.

"Copying what’s genuine may be a good thing, but inventing what’s genuine is even better” wrote Verdi in a letter to Maffei in 1876.
In Italian, "Traviata" means “femme fatale” or “a corrupt woman”.
Inspired by his own life, Verdi depicted a real scene of bourgeois passion, elevated to the heights of immortal love.
At the time, the composer, who was a widower, was having an affair with the “cantatrice” Giuseppina Strepponi. He met disapproval and rejection from the “petits bourgeois”, the lower middle class from the small town where he lived in the south of Italy.
In “La Traviata”, Verdi told this world of pettiness and meanness, where respectability is purely a facade, exactly what he thought of it and of which Germont represented a form of archetype.
He also paid homage to women who sacrifice their lives for the sake of love, a recurring theme in Verdi’s dramatic art.
Proof of Verdi’s love for Giuseppina, to whom he got married in 1859.
The opera’s musical language is extremely varied.
The main arias possess such a high melodic qualities that the work cannot but charm its audiences as it progresses from joyful celebrations to the most poignant emotion – which explains why La Traviata has become one of the world’s most popular works in the lyrical repertoire.
The opera will be presented in the form of a concert, without scenery or costumes.

At the Musée des Tissus and the Musée de Fourvière
As part of the Year of Armenia in France events, the Musée des Tissus and the Musée de Fourvière are collaborating to propose two complementary exhibitions devoted to Armenian religious art.
Discover the great cultural and spiritual wealth of a people who live on the frontiers of Asia, Europe and Russia and who have succeeded in keeping their Christian faith and their art and in staying close to us at the same time.
This production reveals a wide range of Persian, Ottoman and Indian influences and is a reflection of intense, but relatively unknown, artistic activity.

The Musée des Tissus presents 50 items: choir hangings generally dating from the 17th to the 19th centuryfrom the historical Museum of Yerevan and the treasure of the katholikos seat in Ejmiatsin.
Their large dimensions come from their use as curtains to decorate and hide the church choirs during important moments of the liturgy, in particular during Elevation.
Designed as full pictures printed or embroidered on silk and cotton, they represent mostly subjects from the New Testament with a preference for scenes from the life of the Virgin and of Christ, as well as from the life of saints particularly honoured in Armenia, such as St Gregory the Illuminator, Armenia's first patriarch.
This type of production is reminiscent of some miniatures which could also feature in the exhibition.
They show a variety of influences and are a reflection of an intense, if often unrecognised, artistic activity.
The Musée de Fourvière will display 70 church ornaments (vestments and gold and silverware) from the same institutions.
Both exhibitions form the chore of events organized in Lyon around the theme of Arménie mon amie.
Various activities are proposed in conjunction with the Musée de Fourvière.

Inside glove-leather – exhibition
|
From October 16th 2009 to March 28th 2010
At the Lyon Fabric Museum (Musée des Tissus de Lyon)
Gloves are to Millau what silk is to Lyon: a field of excellence, resulting from exceptional know-how recognised and applauded throughout the whole world!
The Fabric Museum is exhibiting some 350 gloves, the oldest of which go back to the end of the Middle Ages. Designed by the most renowned houses such as Hermès or Chanel…, and made by famous workshops like the Maison Causse…
Gloves belonging to stars and celebrities the world over, gloves of men in power, sports’ children’s or dolls’ gloves, gloves in different materials and forms: embroidered fabrics or leather…
The exhibition draws a panorama of all the aspects of gloves’ symbolism, of its protective role, its role of power or a fashion accessory…
Leather tawing, dying, glove-making with the glove-cutters’ work and then commercialising, every stage reveals fascinating, meticulous and rigorous craftsmanship.
We really enjoyed this original and rich exhibition.

Lions Biennial Festival 2006
|
Lyon-Turin: Lions-nous!
Torino-Lione: Una passione
Urban open-air exhibition
Lyon: April 8th to July 8th 2006
Turin: July 15th to September 30th 2006
Auction in Turin with a linkup to Lyon on October 5th 2006 organised and conducted by Anaf Arts Auction The first “Lions Biennial Festival” associates Turin, the city of the 2006 Winter Olympics and whose emblem is a bull, with Lyon and its emblem – the lion.
Lyon and Turin, two closely-related capitals turned to the outside world, foster the same passion for liberty, culture, creation and heritage, the spirit of enterprise, arts, football, silk, luxury… life! With the cities’ emblems as a starting point, complete freedom has been given to 69 artists from Italy, France and the world over, sculptors, painters, engravers, stylists, textile creators, fashion designers, plastic artists, etc.
30 artists have a life-sized resin sculpture of a lion in movement; 39 others a bull in movement, on which they can use whatever art-form they wish: sculpture, painting, collage, engraving… The sculptures are fixed to solid bases.

From spring through to autumn, the travelling open-air exhibition of the 69 works will be presented first in Lyon and then in Turin, to symbolise the links between the two cities and strengthen relations between their populations...
From 5 to 7 July, before their depature to Turin, the sculptures will be exhibited:
- in the Town Hall courtyard for the 42 ones which can stay outside
- at Anaf Arts Auction (Place Jules Ferry) for the 27 ones which need to be protected from the weather.
After the exhibition, which will be accompanied by the publication of a book written in French, Italian and English, the works will be sold by public auction on October 5th 2006 in the Turin City Hall with a duplex linkup with the Lyon city Hall. The results of the sale of each work will be shared between the artist and the Production, who will use the profits to support charity projects and the next “Lions Biennial Festival”, Lyon Montreal 2008, followed by Lyon Canton in 2010 and Lyon Frankfurt 2012…
Creating relations by highlighting differences, uniting people through culture, making artistic creation and man’s heritage our daily environment, these are the Lions Biennial Festival’s objectives, through which, with its lions, Lyon, a home to culture and national heritage and a place of encounters and tolerance is continuing to open its doors to the whole world.
Look for the lions and bulls in the city’s streets and squares!

“By Toutatis! The religion of the ancient Gauls”
|
Until June 30th 2007.
At the Lyon-Fourvière Gallo-Roman Museum
Most of us see the religion and society of ancient Gaul through the famous Asterix series of cartoons, which is a voluntary reflection of 19th century clichés:
venerable druids with their long beards who sacrifice their victims in the depths of oak forests between dolmens and menhirs; Getafix gathering mistletoe with his billhook of gold in the trees of the forest or officiating beside mysterious sources hidden in the woods; a warlike society with a rudimentary social organisation, amateurs of feasts and banquets…
Over the last twenty years, the work of archaeologists and historians has revealed the inaccuracy of these commonplace beliefs, which remain deep-rooted in our collective memory...
Aimed at a very wide public, the Par Toutatis ! La religion des Gaulois exhibition invites us to plunge into the depths of Celtic culture, into this unknown episode in the lives of our ancestors, the Gauls.

The “Par Toutatis ! La religion des Gaulois” exhibition endeavours to remedy this situation by confronting the principal commonplace beliefs concerning religion in ancient Gaul with the latest discoveries in historical and archaeological research.
Knowledge of astronomy, mythology and the main divinities, druids, places of worship and sacrificial rites are tackled in an interesting and attractive way: magnificent objects from national and European collections, visual atmospheres calling on the latest audiovisual and multimedia technologies, and life-sized reconstitutions of Gallic sanctuaries and the ceremonies that took place in them.
A programme of different activities is proposed around the exhibition…
